Four years ago, singer-songwriter Liz Green released her first single, ‘Bad Medicine’, which featured some pretty basic guitar playing, but a wonderful vocal that paid a clear debt to Billie Holliday. Having won the Glastonbury Emerging Talent competition, Liz Green promptly vanished from sight, the work for her debut album hindered by her fear of the studio. Green has now re-emerged with an album ‘O, Devotion!’, released in November 2011.
Liz Green’s delicate songs are a perfect blend of grassroots jazz, muddy blues and homespun folk, with vocals which are a bittersweet lamentation with a gritty soul and pathos, likened with Billie Holliday and Nina Simone, all topped off with a street-smart snarl and disdain that is unmistakably home-hewn.
The beauty of ‘O, Devotion!’ is to be found in its simplicity. Its careful arrangements, coupled with Liz Green’s unusual but deliberate vocal style and ear for a story, comprise a lasting testament to her talent.
