Czech Tour The tour had been very successful apart from the theft of 4 pillows by pillow thieves who travelled with us . The tour would certainly happen again next year Karen & Amy had written a tour diary for 'The Sticks' magazine and Andy & Helen had written one for 'Big Gig' Sedgemoor have changed their funding rules and it looks like only sedgemoor residents aged up to 26 in full time education will be eligible for a £20 refund. Please submit a request if you fall into this category

Grant application Although Matt Bartlett had got the application in on time Sedgemoor officers had failed to present the accounts to the relevant committee and so it had to be deferred. It should also be pointed out that the new Tory dominated committee has recommended a reduction in grant despite the Arts Officer recommending continuation at the same level and support for this from Labour & Lib dem councillors.

Finance 1)We have £100.56 in the SCMG/CD Project account . 2)Karen has changed the account detail and re-designate signatories. K .Ritchings, N.Tuckwell,J.Addicot & R.Perdrix. 3)John Addicot had a further £67 in the 3 Crowns account

Jubilee Event ;-Afternoon of June 3rd at Bridgwater Arts Centre. We will be showing the Sex Pistols 1977 anniversary film 'filth & the fury' and we need bands to offer to play live rearrangements of 1977 songs (under 98 db). A form is enclosed for bands who'd like to join in. Airfield agreed to be The Carpenters while Harsh considered doing Terry Wogan

Bridgwater Summer Fest Sunday 7 July at Cranleigh gardens Bands now need to tell us if they want to play. The following bands have so far been confirmed- BIKESHED, STUPIDICUS, ENDEAVOUR, HARSH. We would need to make a bid to Somerfest for the following funding options;- PA (£100 art centre) STAGE (£100 grapevine) Lighting-including clear up floods £10 Grapevine) generators (??£200) Portaloos (?) Public liability insurance(?)

Three crowns;- A gig put on by Matt wasn't too well attended but the next gig (played by the 4 czech touring bands) generated a large turnover . Gigs were booked up until September by John but he was looking for someone else to take over then. Another idea put forward was for bands to organise their own gigs utilising scmg resources or for a job share option.

Website;- Matt explained this was costing him money now and he needed about £100 from scmg to run it. He had put this into the sdc grant bid anyway

Bandzine;- John had decided to bring out a bandzine based on bands at the Three crowns and was looking for contributions

1. FINANCIAL POSITIONS

We have £100.56 in the SCMG/CD Project account Karen hadn't heard from Paull Kelly re the bank details. Matt would contact him. . Karen would change the account details and re-designate signatories. K .Ritchings, N.Tuckwell, "&" R.Perdrix.

There was no report from John Addicot regarding the 3 Crowns gig fun which hat the last meeting had . C. £100 in the kitty.

It was agreed to set up a SDC Grant panel to submit a bid by the end of January. This would consist of Matt Bartlett and Nick Tuckwell . Brian Smedley would advise.

2. CROWNS GIGS

There was no report from john Addicott regarding the 3 Crowns gigs although Matt reported that the last Spankboy/Visitors gig had gone well with at least 80 in the audience.

Money for equipment renewal. It had been agreed at the previous meeting that cash from the current 3 Crowns fund plus cash from Matts previous 3 crowns gig kitty should be used to refund Ivor Hawthorn for microphone wear and tear and a group of. John Addicot, Adrian Baker,Matt Bartlett ,Ivor Hawthorn would meet to further this. However, Matt "&" Adrian brought a proposal to the meeting which involved

1) Utilising Adrian Baker in future to co-ordinate the PA role

2) Redividing the take from 3 crowns gigs 5 ways (after payment of door staff) 3/5 to the bands 1/5 to Adrian for PA and 1/5 to SCMG. (Assuming 3 bands played)

Matt explained that to achieve this we would have to increase the door entry to £3. Members present agreed it was still a good price. Helen White pointed out that quite a lot of people were getting in free "before" the official doors opened. Matt added that the 5 way split should be "at Johns discretion" regarding the bands. Adrian said he would like to develop a pool of technical support staff and the leaflet "A Unique Opportunity" is enclosed for anyone interested.

Matt reminded the meeting that John still needed help on the day of the gigs (2-4pm) and for clearing up (5-6 next day)..

3. PROJECTS

a) CD releases; Project funding had been provided to THURSDAY WEEK ,BIKESHED STUPIDICUS, THE VISITORS, JUDGE JOE YODA, THE SYCAMORES and CIVIAN. There was still £100 left but the meeting agreed to hold it over until the next grant situation was known.

b) The Compilation CD "THIS IS BRIDGWATER (volume III)". had been released successfully with bands getting material and cash in on time, printing and launch achieved within cost and promos sent out. Response had been encouraging with a particularly good review in the Bridgwater Times, stuff in the ticks "&" the Mercury and several radio interviews. Adrian Fraser had featured the albums over 2 shows on BCFM.

3 PLANS FOR 2002

a)Battle of the Bands No one still had offered to organise our own battle of the bands season this year and so it was noted that the "Old Market" pub was advertising for a "Battle of the Bands" with £700 cash prizes. Although concerns were expressed that this may not be as good as us keeping our original/local/alternative hold on our own idea, members felt that bands could join in the "Old Market" scheme "if they liked'. Matt would visit and talk to them. Rich Baker said the deadline was 28 January for submitting demos. Andy Duckett suggested instead we set up an "Awards ceremony"

b) ARTS FESTIVALS The date has been set for the weekend of 5/6/7 July at Blake Gardens but nothing definite until the next meeting end of January

c) JUBILEE EVENTS There will be a decision about a June 3rd National "BBC Music Live" even in Castle street by the first week in February.

d) Glaiverecords - Matt Bartlett "&" Matt Hayman (Glaive records www.glaiverecords.com <http://www.glaiverecords.com/> ) brought to the meeting a proposal to set up a "glaive records" shop on the Midnight Mango website. This would involve some form of price standardisation, for all bands involved and an element of profit to glaiverecords in return for setting up a world-wide credit card purchase facility for local bands. Glaive also currently do this for Sink and Stove . It was also possible to sell other merchandise like t-shirts etc. Some members were concerned about the cost and why we couldn't just do it ourselves whilst others felt it was a good idea. The Matts were asked to meet and come up with a proposal for a way forward.

d) CZECH TOURS ( 29 march- 7 april- £150 per person -includes travel "&" accommodation) . £10 deposits were needed by this meeting. The following names had achieved this and their places confirmed so long as they met the next payments £70 by 20 Feb. and £7- by 20th march

Plans for 2002:
Battle of the Bands :
No-one had come forward offering to run this event in 2002. Jon Addicot was asked to consider programming it into the Three Crowns Season. Tom Sellick agreed to report back on other possible venues
Arts Festival: a date has been set for the weekend of 5/6/7 July. We had informed the committee that we wanted Blake Gardens rather than Cranleigh this time. We wondered whether we could provide our own bouncers in future and get some training.
Jubilee Event: June 3rd would be a National "BBC Music Live" style event based on the Queen (Elizabeth ii) having a golden jubilee. Whilst we weren't that fussed about celebrating that, we nevertheless thought it would be good to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the 1977 jubilee which gave birth to punk rock et al. We agreed to try a street party in castle street in conjunction with the art centre, feature a few punk bands, tables, a small stage, a closed street and maybe Julian Temples "Filth "&" Fury" film and get the BBC to link us in to the other street parties oh yes.
SDC Grant: SDC was conducting a review of ALL grants so we had to wait until January to know the new system. Then the Chairman and a small group would have to devise a new bid.
Czech Tour: a date has been set for 29 march- 7 april. So far Bort, Civian , Stupidicus and Bikeshed put names forward. However, this year we didn't get the Euro grant money so we would have to finance this by taking MORE people, probably on a coach. A price would be got and interested types circulated

Sedgemoor Contemporary Music Group
Thursday 15th November

Organisational Structure:
Elections were held for SCMG officers 2001-2002
Chair: Matthew Bartlett
Vice Chair: Tom Mutters
Secretary/ Events organiser: John Addicott
Treasurer: Karen Ritchings
Assistant Treasurer: Nick Tuckwell

Financial Position:
We had £1326.56 in the SCMG/CD?Project account and £100 in the 3 Crowns gig fund. Paul Kelly would arrange the change in names from the bank and include signatories. K .Ritchings, N.Tuckwell, "&" R.Perdrix.

Three Crowns Gigs:
John Addicot reported that the gigs were going well and he was now steering away from the punk gigs to a more eclectic mix of music. Next year there would be only 2 gigs a month plus one Tempest (recorded music evening) + free Saturdays for bands to do their own thing. John said however he needed a hand in promoting (posters designing/distribution etc) "&" a joint Stage Manager who could take over on the night as he is in Plymouth a lot. Matt "&" Tom offered help with stage management whilst Nick "&" Andy said they would give a hand with technical affairs.

Projects:
Part of the brief for obtaining a SDC grant was to produce material by original, local bands and make it available to the public The meeting agreed to use the SCMG money before the end of the year to bring out the 3rd Compilation CD and to fund immediate releases by local bands. £200 was allocated each to THURSDAY WEEK, BIKESHED "&" THE VISITORS with a further £300 available for other bands who applied to us within the next weeks. The compilation will be called THIS IS BRIDGWATER (volume III), with a suitably cheesy feel to the cover. Fat Bald Dave agreed to do the cover. Rob Perdrix agreed to co-ordinate the master.
BANDS INTERESTED IN BEING ON THE COMPILATION SHOULD SEND UP TO 2 ORIGINAL SONGS ON ANY FORMAT TO: Rob Perdrix 11 Potterton close, Bridgwater TA6 6EU.
Rob will present what we have to the meeting on 5 December and we' ll aim to release it at the double xmas gig weeked on 22 dec. Bands involved would contribute £20 each in return get 20 CDs to sell (for a suggested £5 each) and a further number would be sent off as promo to venues/press/A"&"R/etc The budget for the project would therefore be in the region of £600

Plans for 2002:
i)
Battle of the Bands: It was agreed to try to run another Battle of the Bands but it was felt that Remedies was not the best place due to its age restriction. It was also felt to be more important to do the series later in the year to allow more time. The 3 crowns was suggested as the best venue with door take used as prize money. It was to be a future agenda item to be considered in conjunction with the annual Three Crowns programme and would need at least someone or maybe a small committee to run it
ii) Arts Festival: A date has been set for the weekend of 5/6/7 July..The meeting agreed we should participate but felt that Blake gardens was better than Cranleigh gardens, that we should also aim for a beer/food tent as the people responsible could therefore co-ordinate litter clearance too
iii) Czech Tour: A date has been set for 29 march- 7 april. So far Bort, Civian , Stupidicus and Bikeshed put names forward.

Date of Next Meeting:
Wednesday 5th December 8pm at Unity House,Dampiet st ,Bridgwater. Main Agenda;- 1.Compilation album update 2. extra Money for projects 3. Battle of the bands 4. Somerfest 5. Czech tour 6. 3 Crowns gigs

OTHER SCMG NEWS
Accounts;-
We currently operated 2 accounts
1. Main SCMG account-)-This is a bank account in the SCMG name which Paul Kelly has run since the start of the SCMG and which we use to receive money from SDC and contributions from bands to projects and then pay out grants for recordings and general SCMG approved projects . We should have £1500 in this for the new financial year.
2. Events Account;- This comprises 2 blocks of cash ;-Matt Bartlett (old 3 crowns fund)-£300 "&" John Addicot (new 3 crowns fund)-£120. This fund was set up in order to run events at the 3 Crowns, to renew equipment and to cover in the event of a loss. Matts cash, accumulated over a year of succesful promotions, was in his account and could be accessed; Johns was in form of a cash float and included £70 from the recent PA disco frenzy event .
The meeting considered combining all the accounts into one or at least pooling the 2 separate sections of the Events Account but opted to continue the status quo.
DROP THE DEBT AWARENESS GIG

A series of gigs around the Country to draw attention to the need to drop the Third World Debt were being held on November 10th. John had been approached to do one at the 3 Crowns as an all day event. The meeting agreed to support this and he agreed to organise it. Any bands interested should contact him.

The next 2 gigs would be:

The steering group would be ;- (Brian Smedley, Matt Bartlett, Jon Addicott "&" Ivor Hawthor)
Matt agreed to co-ordinate booking the bands for the event.
Adrian hadnt submitted the bid for funding and so we were unsure if we could finance the event.
John Richards would look into staging "&" generators, John Addicot would also look into staging, Adrian Baker would look at sound and lights . All should contact Brian with estimates by Friday 16 march. Bouncers had cost £12 a head last time but a deal with Carnival stewards may be accepted by police-however until this was confirmed we should include it as a cost
Names of bands needed to be submitted to Lucy Ball by end of March
There would be an Arts festival meeting 21.3.001 at 3.30 held at mercury offices. No one was able to go and so we would submit a report to this meeting

TRANSPORT OF EQUIPMENT;- Part of the deal was getting the BAC PA to the venue. For the event on 14th march Brian offered to help Adrian carry it by hand from the town hall 2pm-any other offers would be welcome.
John Addicott said Stupidicus would sort transport on the 21st march.,
On both nights members offered to help carry the gear back to the Town hall. It would be appreciated if other members could also help.
We would see which bands reached the final before arranging transport for the 28th.
WINNERS;-
the meeting felt the points shouldnt be read out and score sheets shouldnt be handed out on the night. Just the reverse order of bands positions.
STAGE MANAGER;-
It wasnt clear to the meeting whether Rob Perdrix was able to do all the nights. Brian would contact him to make sure he would do 14th-if not he would do it himself. It is important though to have an independent stage manager and if anybody can do this please let us know. The SM would have to be there from late afternoon to sort out the sound checks too. CLOSING NOTE;-
Sedgemoor Contemporary Music Group has been going since 1997 when I originally met with local musicians , asked what people wanted and then achieved SDC backing for what was clearly a dynamic original rock scene in Bridgwater. Now having organised itself into a co-operative body to generally support each other SCMG is well respected and gets the largest single small arts grant from SDC (now £1500).
The gigs at the 3 Crowns are extremely popular and well run, we are trusted with organising the Bridgwater Arts festival rock event, weve set up and run 2 battle of the bands, weve brought out 3 CDs by local bands, we operate a website, weve formed a link with promoters all over the South West and weve run a database and newsletter for local bands.
What weve achieved has been because weve worked together and for each other .
As of the next meeting on April 3rd Im going to withdraw from the organisation of SCMG and if the many talented people involved want to take it on to greater and dizzier heights then at that meeting you ought to re-establish yourselves on an accountable basis with elected positions and clearly defined responsibilities thereafter.

Battle of the Bands
The Palace could only offer Sunday night gigs but felt themselves this wouldnt be a good idea.Clive Lilley suggested we hir the town hall and hed do the bar. The meeting rejected this offer.
We had received an offer from Remedies to stage the event and fund whole project (£1200 ) however, they wanted the event sooner rather than later so they could use it to launch live music there. After lengthy debate as to whether we could organise this in the timescale. It was eventually decided we could.. The Contest would feature 4 bands per night (paid £50 each)ÖÖ the final prize would be£400( split £300 £75 £25).Events would be on Wednesday nights in March 7,14,21, + a final on March 28th All events should have the same PA "&" tech the art centres 4 x £50 budget .
Judges-It was felt we needed independent judges with a knowledge of music and an appreciation for what we were doing although they neednt be famous (though this might help). The Venue would cover publicity
Demos (CD or cassette) should be sent or taken NOW (or pretty quickly anyway) to Louise Reid, Battle of the Bands REMEDIES 62 High street, Bridgwater TA6 3BN.
The preliminary hearings will be through the house sound system at Remedies from 19.00 on Monday 5th February. 4 bands would be chosen by a panel of judges for 3 heats (bands should advise in advance which heats they cant do) The winner of each heat would perform in the final. There is NO limit on genre of music, bands neednt just be from Bridgwater, but they must be able to play for 40 minutes.
LAUNCH PARTY Remedies have asked us if wed like to try out the venue on Feb 14 (Valentines night) (err, girls) no money but some free drinkswould any bands like to try out the venue that night??? Ring Brian 01278 451877

BRIDGWATER ARTS CENTRE UPDATE
We had won a battle at the arts centre and the venue would now not close and was able to consider re-introducing rock music. There was the possibility of re-locating the Arts Centre to another venue but the membership had supported our conditions of a move only into a venue which provided a performance standard theatre (where we could put on rock music.) We have asked the Art Centre board to consider asking SCMG to run its rock music programme and they have asked us to run a trial gig in February (while Margaret Rees is in Australia)this could be done as a benefit for the Arts centre and could be the 2nd Feb or the 9thany offers??(Brian 451877)

OTHER BUSINESS;-
*John Addicott would be running a training day for young people at Sydenham Youth centre based on rock promotion and would like experienced members from SCMG to run sessions there. The date would probably be 10th March.

*John also pointed out there were 2 extra Pas available for bands. One at Sydenham youth centre which was being built and one at the YNCA which had been updated.

*Justin from the PRIME was looking for a new bass player (01643 705492)

*Matt had been getting together on a Regional basis with other South West promoters and would attend a meeting on Jan 27th in Taunton to discuss co-operation

Bridgwater Arts Festival 2001
Adrian Baker had gone to the first meeting "&" an Arts festival would be held in Bridgwater 6-8 July 2001 but with limited funding available largely for publicity-and specific arts groups (eg-rock) will be expected to organise their own sections. The meeting agreed that we wanted another festival of live music in Blake Gardens-and that this should be a free event-however, money would be needed for technical back up and security (if required this year). We agreed to organise a free rock event involving 12 original local bands but stressed that attracting sponsorship would be better achieved from the central body. Adrian agreed to look into Arts Lottery Grants and reportback
Our steering group;- (Brian Smedley, Matt Bartlett, Adrian Baker, Colin Heath, Jon Addicott)

Battle of the Bands
The Palace had not confirmed whether it would hold a Battle of the bands in 2001. The meeting agreed that we should look at an option of holding one in Toffs on a Thursday night but that first we should follow up the Palace further.

BRIDGWATER ARTS CENTRE UPDATE
SCMG re-looked at our position re the Art Centre. Brian Smedley informed the meeting of a new option of converting the Methodist hall in Monmouth st to a new art centre.
The meeting made the following statement
1. That Rock should be
regarded as a key component of the Arts Centres programme
2. That as such whatever
option was chosen should provide the facility for rock music
adequate sound "&" lighting system, access to a bar, ability to perform original material, no noise limiter etc
3. That the Art Centre
should strive to maintain a home for the Arts in Bridgwater as a focal point for the artistic community which should include rock music as a key creative artform "&" income stream
4. That the Arts Centres
re-location to the Methodist hall-whilst not ideal-is the best solution
now on offer
5. That rock music locally
is in a strong position
with a growing audience base and a sound organisational framework and that whatever happened with the Art Centre we would continue our activities at various venues around the district

Under current arrangements SCMG were amassing a sizeable amount of money due to the success of recent gigs. Matt was keen to redress this in favour of the bands and so we discussed alternatives for sharing the money or maybe amassing more in order to put on semi name bands. It was agreed that in future the money raised at gigs should be divided equally between the bands and SCMG after £10 sound engineer and £10 doorperson were accounted for. It was also agreed that Matt should take out a reasonable figure to cover the expenses incurred for putting on the gigs (postage/phone/posters etc)
Matt also wanted to be able to give away our stockpile of Moo CDs as in incentive for the lst 30 into future gigs. This was agreed.

WEB SITE;-
Matt is doing websites for bands as part of the Midnight Mango site and has quite a lotup there so far but is keen to get material (j.pegs "&" biogs) still from the following ;-Claire and the Beavers, Parkers Barton,Lewinsky,Bikeshed,Psychedelia Smith

Future gigs;-
Friday 10th November Rose "&" Crown Bridgwater The Visitors + Claire and the beavers
Saturday 11th November 3 Tuns,Bristol Visitors + Claire and the beavers

Arts festival 2001 or Music live festival
We discussed whether to a) repeat the Music live event in Blake gardens b)to join it instead to a new town arts festival run by Lucy Ball town centre manager which would gain sponsorship, but not be solely music c) try both d) do none of the above. We agreed to set up a small steering group to attend the first meeting of the Arts festival group and then make a judgement. The group would be Brian Smedley, Matt Bartlett, Adrian Baker, Colin Heath,Jon Addicott

Battle of the bands
The battle of the bands at the palace last year had been a success and it was indicated that the Lilleys might want to run another this year and increase the prize money. The meeting agreed we should be involved to help set conditions as before. Matt pointed out that Toffs had also suggested that we help them organise one instead.
