No Comply are:
Jon-Guitars,
Kelly-Vocals
Nick-Bass
Oz-Trombone
Matt-Saxophone
Si-Drums
How's
things and what have you been up to recently?
Kelly We've been on tour for the last few weeks
Oz-We spent all our money on going to Alton Towers and
going on lots of fast rides(the band descend into discussing their
day out and the numerous rides they went on at this point, I'm
jealous because I've never been there)
Si-I won lots of teddies.
Is it difficult living in Plymouth, do
you find it hard to get around or not?
Jon-Its harder travel wise, we live
further away than most other people do. We haven't found it really
hard because we started doing gigs in Plymouth and it's always
been that way so we're used to it really.
Kelly-I wouldn't fancy a Plymouth to Scotland straight
drive though!
Is there much of a music scene there?
Kelly- Yeah, it's really good.
Does it bother you when you're lumped
into the ska-punk genre?
Whole band at once- Yes
Matt-Not that there's something wrong with ska, it's just
a bit narrow minded.
Kelly- I think for example, I just read in the local paper
that we're one of the something, something UK ska bands. I think
that if you were a ska fan and you came to see us then they might
be...
Oz-they might be disappointed
Kelly- well no! The might not be disappointed, they might
like us. But if they were expecting the Selecter or Voodoo Glow
Skulls or something with a broader ska influence then you know
Matt-It could be interpreted that we're calling ourselves
that and that we don't know what we're talking about.
Do you think Genre's can do more harm than good?
Jon-well they can be good. Say you like a metal band and another
band gets described as metal then genres are good in that you'll
explore that genre.
What about ska do you think it's un-cool to like ska nowadays?
Kelly-No I don't think so.
Jon- You can tell people think that.
Kelly-Well ska obviously isn't as big as when the Mighty
Mighty Bosstones were huge and No Doubt were playing more ska
and stuff. Obviously it's not as popular but it depends how you
look at it, but I don't think there's anything un-cool about liking
ska. For example, apparently the Voodoo Glow Skulls are doing
amazingly in America again now with packed gigs and everything.
It just shows that things come and go.
Si-It goes in waves doesn't it?
Kelly- As Propaghandi said 'you build up straw men to burn'.
So, I heard you've all gone vegan straight
edge for the whole tour what made you decide to do it?
Nick-Because I reckon it's easy.
I think anything is easy if you want to do it. I said Kelly being
vegan was easy not drinking or smoking was easy, that you can
do anything. It developed into a bet, and it is easy!
Kelly I've found it easier because I was already vegan
and I didn't drink for like a year.
Si-I had to quit drinking every night, smoking twenty a
day and eating, eating...cheese. (Si looked pretty sad, haha)
Are any of you going to keep it up?
Kelly-Matt and Oz are gonna stay vegan.
Matt-Yeah, we'll see how it goes.
I read on your forum the other day about violence outside your
gigs, do you think that violence is prevalent within the scene?
Matt- I think there will always be people who start fights
at every kind of gig and every kind of club. I don't think it
has anything to do with the style of music, it's just how people
are.
Do you think bouncers help or is it just
better to keep it D.I.Y?
Oz-Sometimes bouncers can cause
more harm than good, they just aggravate people even more.
Kelly- Well it depends, we've also had some really cool
people who know the difference between people who are moshing
and dancing, and when people are fighting. I think it probably
is really hard being a security person at that kind of gig because
it's difficult to know when the line is crossed, it's hard to
tell.
Have you ever come across much sexism
within the scene? Especially since Kelly's female and it seems
to get picked up on quite a lot.
Oz-A guy in Edinburgh kept calling
her a bitch!
Kelly- But he calls everyone a bitch apparently. It wasn't
meant as a derogatory comment. To him it was an endearing term,
apparently. He was just like, "err get on your bitch"
but in a Scottish accent
Matt- We never get anything apart from a few random comments
from the crowd.
Si- Get ya tits out.
It's just that people are often like,
oh No Comply the band with a girl singer and they really focus
on that, does it bother you?
Kelly- Well we really try to distance
ourselves from that. I think it works to a certain extent I think
people see us a band rather than just a girl and her band. We're
certainly not just going to play on it as a marketing thing, as
lot of bands do. At the end of the day we're all in this together
as friends and I don't think one person isn't going to stand out
more than another. If people choose to see us that way then there's
not much we can really do about it but we try all we can to not
come across like that
Don't you give out animal rights literature
at your shows?
Kelly- Well we don't give it out,
it's there if people want to take it and read it. I'm vegan mainly
because of other bands we've played with I spoken to them and
read leaflets they had. That's what enlightened me to following
a vegan lifestyle. So we're just doing the same thing because
that's why I went vegan so I hope other kids will do the same
thing.
I personally think its great but do you think some kids might
just do it because Goldfinger or whoever are vegan and not really
think about it that much?
Kelly-I don't know, I just think its good to read and obviously
knowledge is power, everything you read is good, whether you choose
to be vegan or not but as long as you're aware of what you're
doing and the consequences of your actions then fair enough. At
least they're informing themselves which I think is really important.
Obviously you've involved yourselves
in issues such as animal rights but what do you want kids to take
away from your music?
Oz?-deafness, tit-ness, tetanus
what is it?
Rest of band tinnitus!
Kelly-Well I hope that people see our gigs as a release.
Si- Of anger!
Kelly- No not of anger, but of energy. We really like to
get involved with the crowd. That's what we live for, that communication
with the crowd. So hopefully they feel as though they've shared
the experience with us. I mean playing on big stages with barriers
and stuff is cool because you get to rock a big stage you know?
At the end of the day you can't beat being there right next to
people and being able to grab and touch people. Its cool being
in all different sorts of venues and sizes but my favourite is
being really close.
Si- Well being a drummer, it doesn't make much difference
what size the stage is! Therefore, the bigger the place the more
there is to look at, which I like.
What band have you enjoyed playing with
the most?
Kelly-RX Bandits for me.
Si-They're pretty damn good!
Jon-We did like 20 gigs with them so we got to know them
as well. But everyone you tour with you become friends with because
you spend 24 hours a day with them. Like Nerf Herder we did a
month and a half with and they're good friends now.
Are you happy on Deck Cheese Records,
would you ever consider leaving?
Kelly-Well it depends on the circumstances,
what we're doing at the time and who offers you the best deal.
Jon- I mean we've only recently released this album so
obviously it's going to be while until we release the next one.
Si-Well we've had the album out for almost a year now.
Jon-Yeah so we're about a year off releasing the next album.
How far do you want to take the band
then?
Jon-As far as we can really as long
as we're happy with what's going on then and we're not doing it
just for the money or something, as long as we still enjoy it.
Kelly- What money!?
Oz-It would be a nightmare being in a band if you didn't
enjoy it. Because every other bit of it is boring as fuck!
Kelly-Writing and practicing can be fun.
Matt- Travelling's fun sometimes as well, I like it.
Oz-Not if you're in a van with people you hate, its rubbish!
Si-There have been some silent days before.
Kelly-Well if you're with those people all the time, then
there's always going to be those days when somene's annoying you
a little a bit, or you'll be a bit pissed off. But for the most
part we're all really good friends.
Are you guys playing with Walls of Jericho?
Kelly-Yes
Ah so it is you then, I was a bit surprised when I read No
Comply as support.
Jon-We're playing four dates with them I think. Don't know
if we'll last that long though! We played with them on the Eastpak
Resistance Tour. It's well cool getting to play with them because
obviously they are nigh on a full on metal band. Because when
we did the Eastpak Resistance Tour it was mainly hardcore bands,
so it was challenge. Because playing normal shows it's kinda safe,
you know you're gonna be playing to be people who want to see
you.
Um, I ran out of questions at this point.
Oh well.
