What are your names and what do you play in the band?
Matt: I'm Matt and I play drums, this is Ade he plays guitar and sings, and that's Carlos he plays the guitar and sings and he's been in the band about 6 months, and this is Jay he plays bass and he's been in the band about two weeks. Our normal bass player has just had a baby so Jay's come in
DT: Not personally I hope?
(Laughs)
Matt: A medical miracle! We have a really weird history;
me and him (Ade) were in the band to start with, and I used to
play drums and he used to play guitar, we had a whole different
singer, then everything messed around, and Jay's our 14th member
of Phinius Gage.
Ade: Technically he's number 12 but he's come back
Matt: What do you mean?
Jay: Well I was number 12, then Edd was number 13 then
I came back again
Carlos: It's easier to remember numbers than people
(Laughs)
Ade: But we kinda keep touring and we cant sorta not while
we're waiting for you know, babies
Matt: Sorry, long answer to your question there
DT: So how long has it been since the band first started?
Ade: This
is the one I always get wrong
Matt: Yeah
Ade: I'm gunna say about December 2000or was it '99
Matt: Something like that, kinda hard to tell. Something
like 2001 I think
Ade: We kinda fucked around for a year
Carlos: What do you mean it's hard to tell?
(Laughs)
Carlos: Surely at some point you must've said 'Let's start
a band' and that was the beginning of Phinius Gage?
Matt: Well I think the Bio says 2002, that's when we first
started playing shows and whatnot, but we'd been jamming for about
a year before that.
DT: What influences do you have?
Matt: Look
tonight, Jay's got this bass, a bright red bass that's totally
outta Duran Duran or Spandau Ballet
Ade: Loadsa stuff, I think So Cal stuff really like Lagwagon,
Pennysise, NoFX all that sorta shit
Matt: And today we were listening to the iPod on random
and it had some classic metal on it
Carlos: Loadsa Pantera, I'm a bit of a metalhead really
Matt: Yeh, I been getting into some classic rock lately
like Deep Purple
Jay: I'm a bit younger so 4ft Fingers, Phinius Gage
Matt: We're not that old!
Jay: Pennywise
DT: Who are your favourite bands you've toured with?
Ade: It
has to be the Anti-Nowhere league for me
Matt: Proper old school band, you know that Metallica song
'So What', they wrote it. We just toured with them last monththeir
lead singer is called Animal
Ade: And he doesn't have another name, they're all like
'Animal, how's it goin?'
Matt: And when he does it live he does all the actions
like I fucked a sheep, I done smack I done this
(Laughs)
Matt: Really, any band you've seen more than twice that
you then gig with
Ade: You end up falling in love with
Matt: Yeah
Ade: We're really good mates with Failsafe, they're a really
good band their new albums out now
DT: Do you have any funny stories from on tour?
Ade: Tell
him about the time Jay took a shit outta the van
(Laughs)
Matt: On the Anti-Nowhere league tour, Jay got pretty ill
like most mornings, he'd sleep in the van then wake up and just
be sick everywhere. Then one morning he woke up, puked and then
said "I really need a shit" and opened the door and
did one on the pavement!
(Laughs)
Matt: So I said "Did you wipe your arse?" and
he goes "Nope!" and pulls them back up!
(Laughs)
Jay: When we got to the venue I had to throw them boxers
away
Ade: I should fuckin' hope you did throw them away
Jay: I was chaffing
Matt: When we got to the venue I was like did you wipe
your ass? "Nope it's fine!" 10 hours later!? How could
it be fine? The cleanest shit known to man
(Laughs)
Ade: That's our funny story, apart from car jumping
Matt: But that's illegal
Ade: Yeah we don't really want that written up we got chased
up over that once
Carlos: I remember one time we raped that old lady
(Laughs)
Matt: Oh yeh and that time we broke into that warehouse
and stole loadsa videos
Ade: That one time, in band camp
(Laughs)
Carlos: We didn't really steal any videos, and she was
consenting
(Laughs)
Matt: It's kinda weird, that when you tour a lot, some
things that aren't really funny become funny
(Laughs)
Matt: And things that are funny, become normal
DT: A lot of HTBTs
Ade: Yeh to the point of actually having to be there
DT: You've got a new single coming out, would you like to tell us a bit about that?
Matt: It's
supposed to be out today, as a download single so you can get
it from iTunes, Napster, and this new website called punkmetaldownloads.com
and it's like 50p. It's called 'Broken Wings' and we just recorded
it, it's pretty cool, and it's gunna be on our new album which
comes out in February and will come out in the whole of Europe.
Ade: We have two albums out already
Matt: Yeh our last one came out last February, it had really
good reviews!
Ade: We're really pleased with that yeh
Matt: We didn't just do straight up punk we did something
really different and yeh people liked it!
DT: Is the new album along the same lines as the last one then?
Matt:
Well we did the weird kinda diverse one this year, then the one
we're gunna put out in February, we're gunna redo some of the
songs off the first album.
Ade: We did it cheap before we were signed you see
Matt: Yeh years ago, so we're gunna chop those up maybe
screw with them a little and re-record them
Carlos: I'm basically gunna masturbate all over them and
make them sound a little thicker
(Laughs)
Jay: I'm gunna shit on them
(Laughs)
Carlos: God you're obsessed with poo!
(Laughs)
Carlos: I joined up with the band at roughly the same time
we started recording these new songs, and I've always been a fan
of the Gage
Matt: THE GAGE!
(Laughs)
Carlos: But I mean the songs have never been to the point
of like 'ohh yeah, these are amazing!' The songs if you just sat
there would make you look like Timmy outta South Park
Matt: I'm not really sure if that answers you're question
or not I think we strayed?
(Laughs)
Matt: You've got quite a lot now
DT: Oh I'll just put CD, awesome, get it
